Grant and Hepburn sparkle in this “screwball comedy” which is definitely worth seeing but which does not reach the heights the same two would scale in “The Philadelphia Story.” Grant is a successfgul young broker who has made his own fortune through charm and hard work but who yearns to get away and discover who he really is. On a skiing trip, he meets Julia, a fabulously wealthy heiress. The two persuade each other they are in love — but of course it is the elder sister played by Hepburn who is Grant’s real match.

Julia’s family inhabit a mansion worthy of J.P Morgan. The family is headed by a tyrannical old banker. The son is a drunk. Mother is dead. One wouldn’t think this movie was made in 1938. The Great Depression is nowhere mentioned; neither is the swiftly gathering storm in Europe (except in one comment made by a guest at Grant’s engagement party.)

The dialogue, from a stage play, is a bit wordy and old-fashioned. oddly, the best moment in this movie comes in a piece of physical comedy when Hepburn climbs on Grant’s shoulders and does a graceful dive, ending in the two of them somersaulting across the floor.

Well it all ends as it should and they sail off to France (which will soon be occupied by the Nazis). It’s all harmless fun and escapism. Very good but not great.

If I could give it a negative star I would. This DVD has absoulutely NOTHING to do with Christmas and is blatant false advertising. Even the Tom & Jerry classic “Night Before Chirstmas” is not included which should have been an obvious choice for a “Christmas” DVD. Obviously, this is another example of MGM ripping their customers off. I am amazed that they can get away with this stuff. Luckily I was able to return mine to Walmart and get my money back. Save yourself the time and don’t even bother getting it in the first place.

Never mind what the other reviews say, some episodes on this DVD don’t feature any snow because it’s that it’s supposed to be a collection of 7 seasonal episodes. The episodes on this disc are…
1.)Mice Follies(This episode doesn’t exactly take place in winter but it does feature ice skating.)
    2.)Desings On Jerry
3.)The Tom And Jerry Cartoon Kit(My favorite cartoon by William L. Snyder because usually the rest of his cartoons are bad.)
4.)Snowbody Loves Me(Oh,yeah…the DVD continues with my favorite producer,Chuck Jones!)
    5.)I’m Just Wild About Jerry
    6.)The A-Tom-Inable Snowman
    7.)Advance And Be Mechinized
But if you like Mice Follies but don’t want it on this DVD,then buy Tom And Jerry’s Greatest Chases(another DVD including the same episode.) But if you love Chuck Joones and your favorite Tom And Jerry cartoon from the Gene Deitch years is “The Tom And Jerry Cartoon Kit”,than than this the disc just for you. So good-luck.

I wish I coud give this DVD the rating of no stars that it richly deserves. What a waste of money! With all of the quality cartoons from the 1940′s and 1950′s that are available in the studio archives, I do not understand why the cynical empty suits at Warner Brothers would choose a collection from a period when the animation and story lines were at their absolute lowest point in terms of quality.

The only semi-quality offering on this DVD is Mice Follies from 1954, which was duplicated on another recent DVD titled Tom and Jerry’s Greatest Chases.

This is flat-out false advertising on part of the producers of this DVD. It has NOTHING to do with Christmas or the holiday season at all, despite the cover graphics showing Christmas tree lights, holly, etc. Some idiot who obviously feels that a few cartoons which partly include skating or snow in them makes this a “Christmas” cartoon ought to be fired. Most of the cartoons on the DVD don’t even have that.
I got ripped off purchasing this DVD believing what the cover represented would be the content of the material. Don’t make the same mistake and avoid this DVD or video!!

In terms of a Christmas DVD, this is completely useless. It doesn’t even contain the 1941 classic “The Night Before Christmas.” I can’t think of any other reason why it was not included other than the cartoon containing traditional Christian Christmas carols, which is a terrible reason to withhold a cartoon from a Christmas-themed DVD. The cartoons that are included also don’t have much to do with Christmas either; only two of the seven cartoons included have snow, ice, or winter themes.

However, this DVD is useful for a different reason. This is the first DVD of classic Tom and Jerry cartoons that is totally uncut and in original aspect ratio. And it also contains some less popular but still classic Gene Deitch and Chuck Jones produced shorts from the 1960s. The Hanna-Barbera cartoons, of which there are two on this collection, are all being released eventually in big collector’s edition sets in the future. Warner Brothers does not have any publicly-known plans to release the 1961-1967 cartoons, though, and this may be the only way to see a few of them logo-free on a completely uncut collection.

This DVD is also significant because it is the first time a Gene Deitch produced cartoon (in this case, “The Tom and Jerry Cartoon Kit”) has been released on home video in the USA. The Gene Deitch cartoons (made 1961-1962) are rather hard to find logo-free, unless you have easy access to Japanese laserdiscs.

As a Christmas DVD, it’s almost completely useless, but if you have a different interest (like seeing a Gene Deitch cartoon logo-free), this DVD isn’t totally worthless. I would, however, only recommend it if you can find it at a very cheap price.

This movie’s social commentary is relevant today as much as it was when it was made. It’s always a pleasure to watch the acting of Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn and they don’t disappoint in this movie

  7. Firth says

This is a marvelous film with two of Hollywood’s greatest, Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. It’s also a classic, Depression-era film in its focus on dysfunctional lives of the very rich, with much of it shot in a NYC home whose immensity is astonishing. Grant, as Johnny Case, demonstrates that, having made a small fortune on the stock market, he has no need for more. He wants to travel and enjoy life. For those caught up in the grind of typical Depression-era jobs, this 1938 film provided a marvelous escape.

There are parallels to today. Given the high taxes the New Deal placed on financial success, Case’s urge to wander rather than labor for the IRS made a lot of sense. Those he disagreed with are portrayed as greedy. They might have been better portrayed as stupid. Recent research at UCLA says that FDR’s policies, hostile as they were to innovation and success, added seven years to the Depression. His current heir in the White House seems intent on following a similar path, one that could turn a recession plus credit crunch into a full-fledged depression and serve as an excuse to engage in an FDR-like expansion in the scope of government. [...]

The “forgotten man” of the title is the working man who gets shafted when a politician agrees to provide money to someone in exchange for their vote–people for instance, who borrowed more than they could afford for a home. And many of today’s forgotten men, those who’ve been careful not to buy too much home for their income, are thinking of adopting Cary’s Grant’s solution, paying less in taxes by earning less and enjoying the time they save. And without their hard work and innovation, the US economy could go downhill quite fast. It’s what we get when we elect a president who, like FDR, has never held a real job and who thinks words are realities.

  8. Teicher says

This was one of those Cary Grant/Katharine Hepburn movies I had never seen and I’m sorry I’d missed it. It is indeed an overlooked classic and considering it is Grant and Hepburn teamed with George Cukor that surprises me. Grant and Hepburn are in great form, each playing into the romantic comedy nature of the picture with full commitment. But don’t get me wrong, this isn’t some zany, screwball romantic comedy. There is some wonderful depth. When it needs to be charming, it does so brilliantly. When it needs to get a laugh, it does. But underlying it all, there is real human emotion here, and when it needs to turn serious, it does so well and with great ease. So yes, it is a romantic comedy, but it is one that is most often played quite real.

Unsung in this movie also is the magnificent Lew Ayers who I almost didn’t recognize. He, together with Hepburn, show us in lovely detail how a life ruled by money can be suffocating and demoralizing. It never gets preachy and it does end with a happily-ever-after, but this really is so much more than a “romance.”
