The first three discs were only OK. I had forgotten how much better the later Broadway musical recordings were. The last two discs were very good, maybe because I could relate better to the shows or perhaps the productions were better.

This movie was good reminds us what it was like back when. Also how children showed respect to parents. parents and grandparents all worked hard,an children did chores too.
It was a good movie an one i could watch again.

I have ordered my DVD and await with much anticipation. I already know what I’m getting !! I watched this wonderful movie as a child and have always wanted it. But I could not afford it at store prices. The only version I had was an old ,terrible, partial VHS recording I got off of TV many years ago,off of a station that was barely coming in. As bad as it was, I still had to “watch” it, if only to hear most of it !! As it’s been said over again, I searched for it every year on TV, but never found it being shown, even at Christmas-time. As all the lovers of this movie, I can remember EVERY scene with detail & loving kinship. As poor as this family was, there was always a coziness and bonding throughout the entire household that I always longed for in my own. This movie is and will always endure as a True Classic !! I also watch it several times a year, especially if I need to be reminded of what true hardships are, and how we can rise above it. I would not have thought of it if Amazon hadn’t recommended it.( Thank you Amazon ! ) I hope other parents will share this with their families !! A must see ! But it is a mistake to watch this with the ” series ” in mind. Although this film starts the series, it stands apart. The adults, other than ” grandma ” are different, and they deserve their own respects as strong personalities and great acting. The expectations should not be at all the same as the series characters. If you remember this going into viewing the film, you will not have that disappointment others have expressed ! Enjoy !!!!!!!

I have loved this movie ever since I first saw it. I will watch it when the Christmas Season arrives. Thanks so much. Happy Holidays a head.

Great movie that started the Waltons TV series. Kids & grandma all the same, different mom, dad, & grandpa. Good clean show. We watch it every year.

  5. Smither says

Outstanding movie for the entire family. Was the inspiration for the TV series “The Waltons” which ran for a number of years.

Packs into 5 CD’s a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20′s thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Of course there should have been much more. I remember there been a Metropolian Opera series called CAST ALBUMS- 100 YEARS that was put out for a limited time only and had like five volumes.
As Peter Filichia noted they left out SHE LOVES ME, BRIGADOON and SWEENEY TODD. Also nothing from PACIFIC OVERTURES, BIG RIVER, CHESS, CRAZY FOR YOU, JEKYLL & HYDE, TITANIC, THE SCARLET
PIMPERNEL, FOOTLOOSE- THE MUSICAL, THE FULL MONTY, URINTOWN…
But they couldn’t have put it all. I would have done without Lee Remick’s
“Anyone Can Whistle”, because the show was a flop. I guess because it was Sondheim’s first “serious” show…

BROADWAY-THE AMERICAN MUSICAL was originally, I believe, a PBS Documentary that can now be purchased on DVD. I haven’t seen any of the PBS Show. However, I am a huge fan of Broadway shows and music. I am a firm believer that the best music of America can be sewn across the tapestry of Broadway: here we have Sondheim and Streisand, Armstrong and Astaire, Merman and Martin, Berlin and Buckley. Listen to this music and you’ll hear the music of America itself.

Okay, enough of my philosophical observations on Broadway. I already know that you love Broadway music. If you don’t, you would have stopped reading before the end of the first paragraph. The question you want answered is this: I want a set of great Broadway music that I’ll love; some that I know, some that I don’t. Is this the set that I should buy?

    The answer is: yes.

This set is brilliant, and well-worth the money you’ll spend for it. That amount of money is quite a bit. However, with five CDs, 109 songs, and a twenty-something page booklet that is interesting and well-written, you will feel very satisfied with your purchase.

Quick, now, look back to the first paragraph and reread the names listed there. All of those were taken straight from this CD collection, and there are lots more besides those. I still haven’t gotten to Jolson, Rivera, Andrews, Orbach, Grey, Lansbury, Mostel, or Channing (plus more). Initially, with this set, you will be overwhelmed with all of the great names and great music. It helps if you listen to it in order (Disc One before Disc 3, etc.), since all of the songs (excluding the first, GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY, which opens every Broadway set) are in chronological order. Listen to a song, and then read the annotation in the book. It will help you comprehend why this song, and the musical it belongs to, are important in Broadway history.

Or, you could just listen for enjoyment.

There are tons of beautiful songs here that I will cherish for the rest of my life: “Memory” from Cats, “Hello, Dolly!” from, well, Hello Dolly, “Open a New Window” from Mame, “Try to Remember” from The Fantasticks. Believe it or not, I had never heard any of these songs in their entirety before I purchased this set. Just think of what I was missing!

Of course, there are some slight disputable errors. There is nothing here from RAGTIME or ASPECTS OF LOVE. And, a couple of songs are sort of unnessecary (I could have done without “I Enjoy Being a Girl” from FLOWER DRUM SONG, 1958.) However, there are many gems I would have overlooked if I had purchased a less comprehensive set: songs like “Luck Be a Lady” from GUYS AND DOLLS or “The Party’s Over” from BELLS ARE RINGING.

Overall, this is the set to have. It is a bit pricy, but the money is well worth the many hours of memories and pure enjoyment. Appreciate the magic of Broadway!

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won’t be disappointed.

It’s an interesting premise: If Saint Nick had an older brother, what kind of sibling rivalry would there be? Well, we find out in the whimsical, yet still unexciting, FRED CLAUS. It looks like older bro Fred (Vince Vaughn, who goes through the motions, and nothing more) resents his kid sibling Nicholas because Nicholas is just so. . .good. So Fred rebels, and while Nicholas becomes a saint endeared to the entire world his brother is a disgruntled outcast with relationship issues (why is Rachel Weisz in this movie?). Of course, this conflict develops over centuries and centuries, because Santa Claus is immortal, therefore everyone in his family–even those who marry into it–becomes immortal.

    Isn’t that special?

It’s impossible for Paul Giamatti to turn in a stinker, so he’s admirable as a stressed-out Santa reaching out to his brother due to a Yuletide crisis. The interaction with Vaughn is one-sided, as Giamatti puts in some effort–Vaughn coasts. Kevin Spacey is the villain, yet the viewer never really understands why. And the beautiful, luscious Elizabeth Banks is utterly, completely wasted in her role as a North Pole bean counter.

One scene, which I immensely enjoyed, saved good ol’ FRED CLAUS from two-star status, and that was a Siblings Anonymous meeting, featuring a contrite Roger Clinton and an angry Stephen Baldwin. It was funny, it was entertaining, it was witty, it was engaging–but one scene does not make a movie good. Case in point: FRED CLAUS.
