Great winter holiday Pamplets

The Doll is just gorgeous. Has a beautiful face and hairdress. Would say looks like a Siberian queen, very elegant. The box is suited with some frozen branches with a traslucid blue background, a winter forest.

great system. i own a wii and gamecube but this system has quickly trumped them both. great graphics, great interface, great everything.

I was happy to find out that the 2009 Holiday bundle packs are the Jaspers, but to play in HD you still have to provide a HDMI cable. The other Elite systems include a HDMI cable but the holiday bundle does not. Other than that this would’ve gotten a 5* review. PS3 is still the better of the 2 systems though…

This is definitely the latest version. The Power supply is only 150Watts! That must mean the latest smaller chip-fab technology.

The box is very quite (because of the low wattage it has less heat, so less fan noise).

The picture is very good from the HDMI (although I had to supply my own cable).

The 360 is a very powerful little game console and it looks like the technology is maturing nicely.

This is a big improvement over my old 360 which had component video, was hot, obnoxiously loud, and seemed slower to boot up. This one boots up quick and the new dashboard software is nicer than the old one.

As far as this bundle, I haven’t played the game so I don’t know about that, but it would be nice if a play-and-charge kit was included. At at least they give you a first set of batteries for the controller. And with this bundle you know for sure you are getting the newest version console. Only 150W and runs quietly.

This is the third 360 I’ve owned, and by far the one I’m most pleased with.

First, it’s quiter than the ones I’ve dealt with before. It makes a bit of noise but not nearly as much.

Second, gotta love that black finish! I was always worried with my older systems about leaving smudges on the white control pad. No problem there now!

Third, the 120GB hard drive that comes with it is pretty sweet. I was thinking about waiting until next week to get the 250GB drive, but I think 120 is more than enough, considering that I don’t download tons of things onto there.

Fourth, the HDMI port! I connected up a cable to my brand new HDTV and, oh, my goodness, does it look great!

Last, the included games. Previously they bundled “Lego Indiana Jones” and “Kung Fu Panda”. In this case you get “Lego Batman”, which is a better game, and “Pure”, which is much better than “Kung Fu Panda”. I don’t care for racing games, so I probably won’t play it much, but at least I might play it more than once, which wasn’t the case with KFP.

Overall this is quite a good buy! You get the system, two games and a good sized hard drive for only $50 more than a system with half the drive space and no games. Really, there’s no reason not to buy this system if you’re after a 360!

With every new version, I run out and try it hoping for new results

this version puts off much less heat however

still way to loud on the fans and dvd rom sounds cheap and loud as well

Interface still seems like fisher price and lack of usb transfer from a software company is cheap

120 GB HD is 149 (You can buy a 500GB for 89 dollars and put it in a PS3)
wifi is 99(really ms? after how long on the market, wifi is a standard on most systems)(standard in a PS3, and cost about 7 dollars to make)
Live is still 50? how about 19.99?

This hardware is still shoddy feeling and sounding and the nickel and diming makes you laugh

If your a grown adult and looking for quality hardware and something that has a bang for a buck, skip the xbox360 and get a PS3 and if a PS3 isnt your cup of tea wait till next gen to try the next Xbox

Coming on the tails of a full-throttle fantasy in PETER DUCK, Ransome comes back down to earth in WINTER HOLIDAY. It’s January at the old lake, and now we’re seeing things from the viewpoint of Dick and Dorothea Callum, the children of two archaeologists who are digging in Egypt and sent their children to spend their winter holiday with a family friend. The D’s, as they become known, are different from the rough-and-ready Swallows and Amazons; Dorothea is a dreamy sort, an aspiring novelist, and Dick is an intellectual, an amateur naturalist and astronomer.

Of course, they meet up with the Swallows and Amazons, quickly making friends and providing their worth to the group with their quick wit and superior ice-skating(!). The group is mourning that soon their holidays will be over when Nancy comes down with the mumps, meaning that the group can’t go back to school for another month until they’re sure they won’t pass the infection to others. Then a huge freeze descends, blanketing the land in snow and freezing the lake.

The story is full of delightful exploring in the snow, something I remember myself from my own childhood. The crew build an igloo, rescue a stranded sheep, and learn field communication techniques (actual practical knowledge there). The D’s encounter actual physical danger when they set off for the northern end of the lake after a miscommunication, and end up caught in a blizzard, but all ends well and their place in the group is firmly established when the rest are impressed with their courage and grit.

Again, another delightful adventure from Ransome, something great for kids and parents alike. A good guide for cold-weather adventure, and also a nice antidote to summer heat. Kids will learn the aforementioned field communication bit, but other messages include the importance of good deeds (in rescuing the sheep and also the kids’ determination to rescue the D’s when they’re feared lost), as well as common themes of courage, capability, and that everyone has something to contribute.

Next in the series: The D’s take center stage in COOT CLUB.

I’ve never managed to find a way to go ice-sailing on a sled, but this book made me want to all my life. An unmatched read! Perfect for reading to your kids in the winter!

  8. Carol says

Our family has enjoyed the Swallows & Amazon series more than I initially expected. Each book has taken a few chapters to pull us in and we take it slowly; these are worth your time. The children in the stories are what my kids want to be like: independent and capable, fun loving and creative. The plots and themes are simple and interesting. I recommend the whole series for reading aloud and encourage readers to not drop them if they are not as fast paced as other stories.

  9. Frey says

Beautifully written children’s adventure set in the English Lake District in the 1930′s. The same cast of characters as Swallows and Amazons and Swallowdale but with the addition of two new characters – Dorothy and Dick Callum, who also appear later in the series in The Big Six, Coot Club, the Picts and the Martyrs and Great Northern. All about an extended winter holiday on and around the lake as it slowly freezes over. Ice skating, sledging, exploring, rescuing crag-fast sheep, the adventures come one after the other. As well-written as all Arthur Ransome’s childrens books were, and an enjoyable time-warped look at what life for the english middle class was like in the 30′s in Britain. I grew up reading these books and find them just as enjoyable now as I did when I was 10 years old.

  10. Koons says

It’s been a year and a half since the Walkers (the Swallows) first met the Blackett sisters (the Amazons) and were plunged into Captain Nancy’s adventurous worldview (not that they didn’t have one of their own already). Now, for the first time, we see the six from an outside view–though still that of young people: Dick Callum, astronomy buff, and his sister Dorothea (“Dot”), aspiring novelist, are staying at the lake while their parents are off digging in Egypt over the Christmas holidays, and are caught up in the adventures of the senior group when they attempt to “signal to Mars” by night. The Walkers and Blacketts, inspired by the coldest winter the lake has experienced in living memory, are training for an expedition to the North Pole (the far upper end of the lake), “only the beastly Arctic won’t freeze.” Quite unexpectedly Captain Nancy saves the day by coming down with mumps, which requires all the others to be kept out of school for a month lest they spread the contagion. The Blacketts’ uncle Captain Flint reappears too, playing a pivotal role in the expedition’s preparations. Much of the story is told from the viewpoint of the ever-imaginitive Dorothea, whose writer’s mind puts a unique spin on what she sees. As always there are misunderstandings with the “natives” (local adults, rechristened Eskimos for purposes of the season), and a literally chilling sequence during which the Callums are blown to the Pole by a sudden blizzard. Ransome here proves that it doesn’t have to be summer for his Lake Country to provide plenty of good story fodder, and in the process gives us a unique children’s adventure tale that should be as eagerly welcomed as a read-aloud as any of the others in the series. Not to be missed.

This doll is a great collectors doll,i keep mine in the box and leave it in my doll house.
it’s not a good doll to play with.
    she’s very pretty!

  12. Bazelle says

Hi, i am really into collecting dolls, mostly the japanese bandi sailor moon dolls, as well as the itanian ones too. but I do also collect specailty barbie dolls, and for this price how could you go wrong? This is a beautiful doll, all in white, and very deatiled face! No need to get this doll customized! she’s very durable, but I do recommend not to remove her form the box. (that is if you want to keep this doll in perfect condition) otherwise if this doll is for a child, and you don’t mind spending that much money on a “play doll”, then let the child at it!! Anyway this doll rates very well with me, and I’m very picky about wich dolls are considered art, and this one is!! so don’t wait to get your hands on this one, they do sell out rather quickly!!

This is one of the most beautiful Holiday Barbie Dolls; and I have them all. I love the way mattel is packaging their limited additions. I love to display my collection in my home and this way I can put her on a shelf or put her in my display cases. If you are a collector you should try and get this one. It is not really a doll to play with unless you buy two, but I love looking at her and when I have company they love looking at my collection.

While there is something spectacular about Soul Cake, I found virtually all the rest of the ‘songs’ wanting. Seriously! I think this album speaks more to Sting’s infatuation with himself than the attempt to be the male version of Norah Jones (he falls short). Now on the other hand Nora doing some of these songs…that might be something to listen to.

  17. Koehler says

I really disagree with the other reviewers who slam this cd. This is a reflective mellow winter cd. It’s not Sting singing Roxanne for the millionth time. The songs have a certain wintry feel to them. I particulary like the songs Gabriel’s Message, Soul Cake, The Snow It Melts the Soonest. Great photos and notes also.

If you want a Police cd or a Sting pop cd don’t buy this. If you want a winter cd to sit next to the fire while drinking hot tea…then buy this.

  18. Blankenship says

One thing is that as fans, we can be very demanding and self-ish. When you think of Sting, think of a Professor of his art. He is not your traditional musician who sticks to the same formula. The best suggestion is that when you listen to this album, you should think of it as music by a Professor of his art, not just STING the legendary Rock musician. The best way to listen to this album is on your IPODS or headset. Listen to the album a few times, and it will grow on you. I have to admit, you might not like the whole album, but you might enjoy a few tracks during the cold days of winter: when you are sipping some tea or coffee, or drinking some Cognac, or just simply unwinding the stressful day.

I have started to like songs like “SOUL CAKE” which could become a sleeper hit during the Winter season. I have downloaded the 1st 3 tracks, and i might download 2 or more songs from the album. This type of music is not my cup of tea, but STING as always taken me to new musical journey, and i will continue to support him.

In today’s music, you don’t have that many musicians who can explore different boundaries of music, but Sting is an exception to the rule. So, as music fans, and STING fans, we should respect what he is trying to accomplish.

The good news is that STING will be recording a new POP/ROCK album sometimes in 2010.
